So what is Graphic Design?
Graphic design can be quite a confusing term, below is a breakdown of what graphic design can involve.
What is graphic design?
Graphic design is such a broad term, most people have a vague idea of what it is but there is a lot of confusion surrounding what a Graphic Designer actually does. Creating logos, drawing illustrations, manipulating images, designing adverts are a handful of things Graphic Designers do. These are the elements that build a bigger picture.
Graphic design is everywhere you look
Everywhere you look you’ll probably see graphic design. Whether it’s a book, a shop sign, a leaflet through your door or a bus stop poster, you name it, it’s been designed. Graphic design is all about communicating a concept in a creative way to your target audience. In which case you’ll need a Graphic Designer to help bring all the ideas together.
Graphic design is all about solving problems
Graphic design is a constant problem solving job. With the creative use of text, illustrations, photography, textures, colours and composition a graphic designer will find all sorts of solutions for your concepts, whether that be for print or for web. It’s essentially solving problems visually for all sorts of clients and all sorts of work including branding, publishing, packaging, advertising and digital content. Most importantly it;s all about grabbing the viewers attention with the right message and creative imagery.
Communication is key
Strong communication skills is a crucial part of a Graphic Designers job. Creating designs that look nice on paper or a web page is good but the most important part of the job is the design process, listening to a clients needs and interpreting that with a creative solution. From the start of a project I’ll find out exactly what the problem a client is trying to solve and work closely with them to find the best solution to communicate to their intended target audience.
Logos
A strong company identity is vital. A logo doesn’t always have to be ‘all singing and dancing’. Sometimes the most basic logos are the best. The important thing to consider is having a logo that reflects your company ethos and services.
Branding
You need to consider a lot of things when it comes to branding. You have to ask yourself what it is you’re trying to communicate. How much of a presence and focus you want to put on your branding and who is your target audience. Good branding needs to be versatile to be able to adapt to all sorts of material including business stationery and social media profiles. A strong brand will be future proof to allow for change, development and growth without having to change your branding completely.
Stationery
Good company stationery is key to giving your business a professional look. A well designed business card says a lot about a company. It shows that you care and are willing to invest time and money in your own company. The same goes for letterheads and comp slips. Rather than sending a client or customer an invoice and a plain piece of paper, show them your professional side and send them out on a creative letterhead.
Promotional Material
Flyers, posters, billboards, bus stop posters, pull up banners, event banners, magazine adverts and much more. Whatever your requirements there is more than likely a solution for you.
Creative Visuals
Have you got a meeting or a possible contract coming up? A professional looking portfolio / presentation whether it be in a print or digital format can be essential to give your company the edge. A creative presentation is a good way to showcase exactly what you’re offering and/or proposing. It’ll keep your message clear and all parties on the same page with no room for confusion.
Web Design
A clear, easy to navigate website that reflects your brand is all part and parcel of your company appearance. Your website should be mobile friendly, showcase clearly what you do or the services you offer and be visually pleasing.
Digital Content
Are you in need of well designed social posts and profile banners. Giving your company a professional look on social media goes hand in hand with your website and digital content. You need to reinforce your brand across all social media profiles you run.
